Dismantling a Sophisticated Drug Trafficking Network
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the St. Petersburg Police Department, has dismantled a complex drug trafficking operation that spanned multiple counties and even crossed state lines. The investigation, codenamed "Operation Snow Cap," revealed a well-organized network of individuals involved in the distribution of large quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl throughout the region. The operation began last summer when the sheriff's office received information about Deangelo Woods, a suspected drug trafficker operating in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. Undercover detectives were able to make multiple drug purchases from Woods, leading them to uncover his local supplier, Matthew Turner. Turner, in turn, was found to be obtaining the drugs from a dealer in Los Angeles, California, who would ship the illicit substances to various locations in the Tampa Bay area, including an Airbnb rental property and the home of Tania Rodriguez in Brandon. The drugs would then be transported to a "stash house" in Largo, where Turner and his associate, Henry Smith, would process and distribute the drugs to various dealers throughout Pinellas County. The investigation culminated in a series of raids and arrests, leading to the seizure of 54 pounds of methamphetamine, 21 pounds of cocaine, 2 pounds of black tar heroin, 2 pounds of fentanyl, 11 pounds of marijuana, 3 guns, and ,000 in cash.Uncovering a Disturbing Dog-Fighting Ring
Alongside the drug trafficking investigation, the St. Petersburg Police Department was conducting a parallel investigation that uncovered a substantial dog-fighting ring operating in the area. During a raid on a home on 12th Avenue N., police rescued 111 dogs that were being kept in kennels in the backyard, along with various dog-fighting paraphernalia, including treadmills.Six individuals were charged with animal baiting and fighting, as well as conspiracy to engage in illegal gambling, which was a significant part of the dog-fighting operation. The ASPCA has since stepped in to provide expertise, legal support, and ongoing care for the rescued dogs, with the goal of eventually placing them up for adoption.Addressing the Issue of Human Trafficking
The investigation also revealed a disturbing connection to human trafficking. During the raid on the 12th Avenue N. property, authorities rescued six individuals who were believed to be victims of human trafficking. The five remaining individuals at the scene were charged with drug trafficking offenses. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and the St. Petersburg Police Department have vowed to continue their efforts to combat the various forms of illicit activities uncovered during this operation, demonstrating their commitment to keeping the community safe and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.New
